What’s Included in Your Comprehensive Eye Exam

Eye exams don’t just determine if you need glasses or contacts. Your eye health can be an indicator of other eye conditions. That’s why it’s important you trust a professional, like our doctors, to examine your eye health. Here is a breakdown of the major aspects of a comprehensive exam.

Vision Exam

Measures how clearly you see at both near and far distances and provides an accurate prescription for glasses or contact lenses if needed.

Refraction assessment

Determines the correct prescription for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Eye pressure measurement (tonometry)

Screens for glaucoma, which affects over 3 million Americans and often has no early symptoms.

Retinal and optic nerve evaluation

Checks for signs of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other conditions.

Binocular vision and eye teaming assessment

Evaluates how well your eyes work together, which is particularly important for children and patients with headaches or eye strain.

Contact lens evaluation

Includes corneal mapping and fit assessment for new or existing contact lens wearers.

Optomap retinal imaging (when recommended)

A wide-field digital retinal scan for a detailed view of retinal health.

Exams for Adults

Regular eye exams help protect both your vision and your overall health. The American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive eye exam every 1–2 years for adults aged 18–64 and annually for those 65+ or those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease.

Our optometrists focus on detecting eye conditions early, often before symptoms develop, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. Comprehensive eye exams can also help identify signs of underlying health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Exams for Children

Healthy vision is key to learning and development. About 1 in 4 school-age children has an undetected vision issue that can affect school performance.

The American Optometric Association recommends a child’s first eye exam between 6 and 12 months of age, another at age 3, again before first grade, and annual exams thereafter. At Optical Expressions, we offer pediatric eye exams to help detect problems early and support long-term eye health.

Contact Lens Exams

We offer contact lens exams that go beyond a standard eye exam. In addition to checking your vision and eye health, your optometrist will take measurements of your eyes and evaluate how contact lenses fit and perform.

Because glasses and contact lens prescriptions are different, a separate contact lens evaluation is required to achieve accurate fit, clear vision, and all-day comfort.

How Your Eye Exam Works — Step by Step

Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable before your eye care visit. Most comprehensive eye exams take about 45–60 minutes from start to finish.

Step 1 — Book Online or Call

Scheduling an appointment is quick and easy. You can book online or call one of our locations that is most convenient for you.

Same-day appointments are often available based on scheduling availability.

Before your appointment, please bring:

Schedule Online

Step 2 — Pre-Exam Health Review

Before your exam begins, a member of our team will review your health history, medications, and any vision concerns you may have.

This information helps your optometrist understand your needs and focus on any symptoms or changes you’ve noticed since your last visit.

Step 3 — Comprehensive Exam with the Optometrist

One of our licensed optometrists will evaluate your vision, eye health, and any concerns you would like to discuss.

Testing may include:

Visual acuity testing
Refraction assessment
Eye pressure measurement
Retinal and optic nerve evaluation
Eye teaming and binocular vision testing
Contact lens evaluation when applicable
Optomap retinal imaging, if recommended

This is also the perfect time to ask questions about symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, or blurred vision.

Step 4 — Prescription & Next Steps

After your exam, your optometrist will review the results with you and explain any findings in clear, easy-to-understand language.

If you need glasses or contact lenses, you’ll receive your prescription before you leave. If additional treatment or specialty care is recommended, we’ll explain your options and any next steps.

Patients who need glasses can browse our collection of eyeglasses and frames and place an order during the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an eye exam cost in Phoenix or Scottsdale?

Most vision plans like VSP, EyeMed, and Spectera cover one annual exam. Medical plans such as Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Medicare may also cover exams when medically necessary. We can verify your benefits before your appointment at no charge.

How long does a comprehensive eye exam take?

Most comprehensive eye exams take approximately 45–60 minutes. This includes your health history review, examination with the optometrist, and discussion of your results and prescription.
